What to know about Surfing in Cape Town
Lets start out with Cape Town waters what it is al about and why is there a wave everyday of the year. Well the city Cape Town sits in the clash of 2 oceans The Indian Ocean and The Atlantic Ocean. So you can surf in 2 oceans in one day if you like.
Also a big amount of wildlife is seen in these waters and is known to be seen in some locations whole year round.
The water around Cape Town can be extremely cold (5degrees) and shift to (25degrees) depending on where you are surfing and what currents are running in.

Surfers corner - Muizenberg
Surf level: beginner - intermediate - advanced
Break: right & left handed beach break
A 30 minute drive from the Capetown centre you will find muizenberg, one of the most consistent waves of whole Cape town. Suited for surfers of each level, and one of the best spots to learn surfing.
The waves will line up perfectly with smaller waves in the front and bigger waves in the back.
It can get quit busy in the weekends.
Don’t worry if you don’t have a surfboard with you, there are lots of shops here to rent one for a good price.
Be aware of sharks, but nice to know is that they have shark spotters and a shark alarm, only don’t go in the water when the flag is black.
Longbeach kommetjie (pronounced as kommekie)
Surflevel: intermediate- advanced
Break: right & left handed point break
Close to the cape point and 30 min drive from muizenberg you will find kommetjie, a loved spot by locals. This is a more advanced point break, which can get high and strong on good days.
Has a lot of rips so be aware of that.
Must wear a leash because of the strong & high waves.
Do not surf here if you are not experienced. Wear a thick wetsuit, this waters are one of the coldest from Cape town.

Break: right handed point break.
One of the biggest waves you can find around Cape town, and you should definitely not try it if you aren’t a proper big wave surfer. Situated near Hout bay, You can only reach this wave by boat, and on really big days this wave can reach to 60ft. Be aware of sharks.
Glenbeach - Camps bay

The hoek - Noordhoek.
Surf level: intermediate - advanced
Break: right handed beach break.
A 45 minutes drive from the Capetown centre, almost next to Muizenberg & kommetjie, there is a special spot called the hoek. This wave is only surfable 3 months of the year and that is in summer, and breaks on low tide only. One of the only places where you will be lucky to catch a barrel, the waves are most of the days small to medium height. A popular spot so it can get very busy.
Not for beginner surfers as the waves require some good techniques. Watch out for sharks.
Crayfish factory - Kommetjie
Surf level: advanced
Break: right handed reef break.
One of the other big wave surf spots, and a challenging wave, with raw and wild waves everything a pro surfer loves when testing their skills. These reef break waves can get high and strong so you need to have a strong paddle to handle the big days. They are powerful, hollow and fast. Because this is such an advanced surf spot the water is never crowded. You can watch the surf from the beach as well.
Llandulo bay
Surf level: beginner - intermediate - advanced
Break: right & left handed beach break
A busy spot over the weekends with mellow waves. Really cold water so wear a thick wetsuit. Hollow waves with maybe a change on a barrel if your lucky. As on most places in South Africa, be aware of sharks.
Big bay - Blouberg Capetown
