Traveling from Byron bay to Port Macquarie
We are currently traveling trough Australia, and after staying in Byron Bay for a while to do some work and surf a lot, it’s time to leave again and slowly travel towards Melbourne, with in the mean time a lot of incredible stops on the way.
Watch our latest video on youtube about our first week.
Day 1.
After staying in Byron Bay for a while it’s time to leave again, we’re off to lennox head a small town 20 minutes away and it’s beautiful and quiet. As byron bay could get very busy on the holidays and the high season we love to be somewhere just by ourselves. In Lennox head they have a beautiful coastal line, and the tea tree lake, we enjoyed nature here for a while, had some lunch and went on to our first camping spot, a 1.5 hrs drive further we arrived at Black Rocks camp ground, this camp ground is in the middle of Bundjalung National Park, a rough off road drive to an incredible spot next to the beach where you will see why this place is called Black rock.
Day 2.
We woke up in the beautiful nature of Black Rocks, next to the beach and went for a refreshing swim first thing in the morning. After having breakfast and packing everything again we headed off to Yamba, a small village where you are surrounded with beautiful beaches. We of course wanted to go for a quick surf so we went to pippi beach one of the better surf spots in Yamba. After a good surf session we went on with our road trip to Coffs Harbour, thus is a bigger and more known place by tourists, just 1 hour south of Yamba. We stayed here for two days, and had the most amazing curry as dinner, and went for an early sleep because as everyone one can imagine, traveling life is a hard life haha.
Day 3.
Woke up all all fresh and full of energy in Coffs harbour, today we planned to do something exciting. We went to the Dangara falls, and we were really looking forward seeing our first waterfall in Australia, and one that’s actually filled with water, as we had a couple of really dry months. The drive to the waterfall was already amazing, and very promising, the road goes up trough the mountains passing different little waterfalls and the view from up there is breathtaking. We arrived at the waterfall, it’s a very big fall and really beautiful, you can actually swim underneath it!!! This place is magical and very relaxing, we could spend hours here looking at the waterfall or just swim in the cold water. Also a very nice spot to have a picnic. If you’re ever in the region of coffs harbour you should definitely check it out.
Day 4.
Time to leave Coffs Harbour again, after getting a wake up coffee we went on with our road trip, our next destination: Sawtell, very close to coffs Harbour, but such an hidden gem! The beaches here are just beautiful, there are little rock pools filled with star fish and next to the beach is a very big blue lagoon, you can walk trough the crystal clear water and look for little crabs and bigger fish then we taught. We didn’t spend the night in Sawtell because it was hard to find a camp ground that wasn’t that extremely expensive, so we drove a little bit further south to crescent head a little surfers town. Found a nice camp site next to the beach, and went to bed with hopes on good waves tomorrow.
Day 5.
Woke up in crescent head, had a little windy but nice breakfast on top of the hill next to the beach, and checked out the waves after at the main beach where Chris decided to give it a go on the high waves i decided to wander around and make some pictures of him surfing. Next to this all was a llittle beach called pebbley beach, the views from this beach are beautiful, especially if you walk up the hobbit hill you can look out over the ocean. Later After a cold surf it was time to leave again on to our next destination Ellenborough national park in the Port Macquarrie region. The campsite where we went to in Ellenborough is beautiful, it’s next to a big river and as it’s been above the 35 degrees the last couple of days this was a perfect place to cool off for the rest of the day and enjoy the surroundings.
Day 6.
Woke up late and relaxed a bit at Ellenborough campground, had a good breakfast, went for a nice swim and did some exploring. One thing you must know about Chris is that he is a complete nature freak and wants to see as much insects, birds, fish and other animals as possible, so thats what we looked for the rest of the morning. Later in the afternoon we left to Port Macquarie. And Port Macquarrie has some really nice beaches around, and we found an perfect spot for the night at lake Cathie, a beautiful quit little town next to the ocean, we had a million dollar view from the back of our very own car, also known as our home for now.
Day 7.
Woke up very early to see the sunrise at Lake Cathie, made friends with a water-dragon. Had a nice breakfast in the morning sun. It’s time to leave this beautiful place again, off to Port Stephens, a big village with lots and lots of incredible spots to discover, with so many amazing beaches surrounded by nature. One of the most beautiful places we’ve seen so far. When we arrived in port stephens we started at Nelson bay, the place where we spotted our first koala, high in the tree! We were very happy to see this little koala enjoying his tree and having a great nap not giving anything about all those humans staring. After nelson bay, we went to another beach for a swim, Fingal bay a really nice beach where you can have a great beach walk. It’s Australia day today so we went to a bar for a drink and ate some pizza. We cruised around for a good spot to spend the night when we found the most incredible place we didn’t expect to find, the Iris Moore reserve, it’s next to the ocean, filled with big rocks that make little jacuzzis to swim in, i think it’s impossible tho describe in words how beautiful this place looked, this is one of the nicest spots I’ve seen so far, so if your ever near Port Stephens you should definitely go and look at this place.
We enjoyed the sundown as long as possible, chatted with some locals and called it a day.
